Margaretha Maryk, a native of Sweden, first came to California in her early twenties; then later moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where she and her husband raised their two children. While living in New Jersey, she worked in the fitness field and received a Master’s degree in exercise physiology at Temple University. In 1989, she returned to California and was a resident of Monterey Peninsula until 2003, when she and her husband moved to Bellingham, Washington.

Inspired by the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, she decided to pursue a desire to express herself through photography. Her first serious project resulted in a self-published poster titled Garden Gates of Carmel in 1995 and marked the beginning of her career in photography. She has attended nature photography workshops with nationally renowned photographers through the Rocky Mountain School of Photography and most recently workshops with the English landscape photographer Charlie Waite. Although a great deal of her earlier photography has been concentrated to the Monterey Peninsula and California, she now enjoys the variety of scenery of the Pacific Northwest. Her special love for flowers and gardening has made garden photography her specialty. Margaretha also travels and photographs in other areas of the United States and Europe.

In addition to the Garden Gates of Carmel poster, Margaretha’s images have been published in Monterey Bay Guest Life, other California travel guide magazines, Big Sur Calendars, Teldon’s Nature’s Palette Calendar, Mead Wesvaco Calendars, Saab Soundings, and Art Business News, New York.

"I consider myself a ‘landscape’ photographer and include in that term the grand landscape as well as the intimate, close ups of details in nature and urban scenes. I have chosen color photography as my medium, because I see my surroundings in color and always study the way light affects the colors in nature. My hope is to capture the essence of a scene or subject at any given moment. I use a 35mm Canon camera with an assortment of lenses and a Gitzo tripod. My images are shot with Fuji Velvia film."
